Why PS1 Games Are Still Worth Playing in 2026
The PlayStation 1 era was a golden age of gaming innovation. Released in 1994, the PS1 introduced millions to 3D gaming, cinematic storytelling, and genres that continue to thrive. While polygon graphics have aged, the gameplay, music, and stories remain compelling. Here are ten PS1 ROMs every retro gamer should experience.
1. Final Fantasy VII
The game that brought JRPGs to Western mainstream. Cloud’s journey features one of gaming’s most iconic stories. The Materia system offers deep customisation, and key story moments have resonated with players for decades.
2. Metal Gear Solid
Hideo Kojima’s stealth masterpiece revolutionised gaming with cinematic presentation and fourth-wall-breaking gameplay. Infiltrating Shadow Moses as Solid Snake delivers tension, humour, and depth that few games have matched.
3. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
The game that put the “vania” in Metroidvania. Alucard’s exploration of Dracula’s castle features RPG mechanics, hundreds of weapons, and the unforgettable inverted castle reveal.
4. Crash Bandicoot: Warped
The third and best Crash game perfected the formula with varied level types, time trials, and hidden gems. Tight platforming controls and colourful world design make this a joy to play.
5. Resident Evil 2
The survival horror classic with interconnected Leon and Claire campaigns in Raccoon City. Genuine scares, challenging puzzles, and resource management keep you on edge.
6. Spyro: Year of the Dragon
The best of the original Spyro trilogy offers colourful worlds, charming characters, and collect-a-thon gameplay. Varied playable characters keep the gameplay fresh.
7. Tekken 3
Still one of the best fighting games ever made. Fluid combat, diverse roster, and accessible-yet-deep mechanics make it endlessly replayable.
8. Gran Turismo 2
The real driving simulator with over 600 cars and dozens of tracks. The simulation handling rewards patience and skill.
9. Vagrant Story
An overlooked Square masterpiece featuring dungeon crawling, weapon crafting, and a mature political storyline. Surprisingly deep combat mechanics push the PS1 to its limits.
10. Suikoden II
One of the most emotionally powerful RPGs, featuring friendship, betrayal, and war. Recruiting all 108 Stars of Destiny creates an experience that rivals any modern RPG.
